Handmade Tiles FAQs
Handmade tiles offer a unique, rustic charm to any style of design. These luxurious tiles will feature luscious variations between each individual tile with irregularities in their colour, finish, texture, shape, size and thickness. These qualities are exactly what make handmade tiles so desirable!
Characteristics of Handmade Tiles
An incredibly unique and timeless design choice, handmade tiles will feature variations in their surface texture, colour, shape and thickness with wonderfully tactile characteristics such as pits, cracks, crazing or chips as well. A result of the hand-crafting process, these characteristics are what make handmade tiles so unique and popular!
Why Choose Handmade Tiles?
Handmade tiles will create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the home thanks to their unique characteristics. These tiles suit a range of different interior design styles from rustic country themed interiors to modern and contemporary spaces, creating a wonderfully tactile design element in any application.
Installing Handmade Tiles
As these tiles are made by hand, you will notice variations in their size and thickness, requiring a Tiler that is experienced in the installation of these types of tiles in order to ensure the very best outcome. Individual tiles should be combined with two to three boxes in order to ensure that multiple textures and tones are used in creating the desired effect. Grout joints should be approximately 3-4mm thick in order to best accommodate for the irregularities between each tile.
What Type of Grout is best for Handmade Tiles?
As handmade tiles will often feature thicker grout lines to accommodate for the irregular tile shapes and sizes, a traditional cement based grout is usually the best solution. This type of grout will require sealing in order to keep it maintained over time, ensuring the longevity of your tiles and grout. Our team will make recommendations specific to your tile selection during your consultation to ensure the best results in your project.
Do Handmade Tiles need Sealing?
Certain varieties of handmade tiles will require sealing however, most collections will not. As a general rule of thumb, glazed handmade tiles do not require sealing as their baked-on hardened glaze will act as a protective barrier across the surface of the tile. If your selected tiles feature a crazed finish however, we would recommend these tiles be sealed in order to keep them protected. Un-glazed tiles on the other hand will be porous and as such, will require sealing in order to be best protected against staining or damage. For more information on sealing your tiles, see our guide here.
How to Clean Handmade Tiles
Most handmade tiles will include a baked-on hardened glaze on their surface. This glaze offers an almost glass-like finish, allowing for a simple cleaning process: These tiles will usually only require a wipe with warm soapy water to keep clean, followed by a wipe with a dry cloth to bring out their shine. Specific cleaning products can also be incorporated in your regular cleaning routines: for detailed cleaning product recommendations, visit our Resources section.
Are Sample Tiles a Good Representation of What I can expect in my Order?
The tile sample pieces we offer have been carefully selected to offer the closest representation of what you will receive in your tile order, however, it is important to keep in mind that handmade tiles will feature variations in their colour, thickness, texture, shape and finish as a result of the hand crafting process. Each individual piece is unique from the next so you can expect some differences between tile samples and the final product.
Can I use Handmade Tiles in the Bathroom and Shower?
Yes, handmade tiles make for an excellent choice in the bathroom, especially as a wall tile. Glazed handmade tiles will include a baked-on glass like glaze that creates a sleek, smooth surface finish. This smooth finish provides a wonderfully low maintenance solution for the bathroom walls as it can easily be wiped cleaned with a damp cloth and will not require sealing.
Can Handmade Tiles be used in the Kitchen?
Yes, handmade tiles can be used in the kitchen making for an excellent splashback tile or feature wall tile option. These tiles will add a luxuriously tactile finish in the kitchen, creating a sense of character in your interior design scheme. Certain varieties of handmade tiles (such as encaustic tiles or terracotta tiles for example) may also be used as a kitchen floor tile. These materials will require sealing in order to keep them properly maintained over time. For more information on sealing and caring for different tile materials, visit our Resources section.
Can Handmade Tiles be used as a Floor Tile?
Yes, certain options in handmade tile collections can be used as a floor tile in the home. When selecting your new floor tiles, confirm with the team at Perini Tiles which options as safe for use as a flooring solution during your consultation.
