What is the Difference between Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles?
Two of the most popular tiling choices, porcelain and ceramic tiles share many similarities in their manufacture. Both porcelain and ceramic tiles are made using the same raw materials with both options also being baked in a kiln to harden and remove all moisture. This is where they differ: porcelain tiles are baked for a longer stretch of time and at a significantly higher temperature while ceramic tiles are baked for a shorter period at a lower temperature. The kiln baking process results in an ultra-hard and non-porous material in porcelain tile collections and a softer, more lightweight option in ceramic tile collections. As ceramic tiles are softer and lighter than their porcelain counterparts, they are usually restricted to wall applications only. This quality allows for more creative tile designs and finishes in ceramic tile collections as there is no need to consider issues such as slip resistance, grip or tripping hazards as one would expect in the design of floor tiles.

Most ceramic tiles are glazed (glazed tiles include a hardened, glass-like finish that is baked-on to the surface of the tile) which provides a water resistant barrier to protect the body of the tile while also eliminating the need for sealing. When installed and grouted correctly, ceramic tiles offer an excellent choice for humid and wet areas such as the bathroom and inside the shower.
Caring for Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tiles will usually include a glazed surface finish. Where this is the case, your tiles will not require sealing, ensuring a low maintenance solution for any area of the home. Glazed ceramic tiles will usually need nothing more than a simple wipe down with warm, soapy water to be kept clean. Unglazed ceramic tiles however will require sealing as there is no baked-on glaze to form a protective barrier over the tile. Seal your new tiles prior to installation in order to prevent any tile adhesives or wet grout from discolouring the tiles and then re-seal the tiles every few years or so thereafter to keep them protected over time.
