The ‘Smart Kitchen’: How technology has transformed the Modern Home

Advances in technology have created a world of opportunities and creativity in the design industry with the ultimate goal of making our lives easier. Designers are looking at unique ways to apply new technology, new research and new ways of product testing into our homes, especially in the kitchen. We are seeing the positive results of modern design in all areas of the kitchen, from the way we cook, to the way we clean and even to the way we use storage space.

Appliances and Gadgets

With mobile technology having become an integral part of our daily lives, there are now avenues available to allow us to interact with our home remotely.

We now have apps that allow us to turn on the slow cooker or check the oven, providing a perfectly timed meal every time. We are even able to write notes and reminders for the family on our fridge while we’re not even home.

Applicances and Gadgets, Modern day Sticky Note, The Triby System

The Triby system is a radio, telephone, and message device with voice activation: perfect for the kitchen!

New technology has allowed us a more informed workspace: With chopping boards that give you the complete nutritional value of food and even computer systems built into our appliances (such as tablets built into the fridge door) that give us access to the internet, music and video whilst in the kitchen.

Advanced Lighting Systems

Lighting layouts in the kitchen have gone from a single hanging light bulb in the centre of the room, to carefully designed lighting plans created to ensure optimum lighting for safety, health and comfort in our kitchens. We now have options in pendant lighting for ambience and decoration, task and focused lighting for safety and improved visibility, LED lighting strips to set the mood and even automatic ON/OFF lighting systems for our pantry interiors.

Hardware and Appliance Testing

Today’s cabinetry hardware is far more advanced, reliable and sophisticated than ever before. Drawer runners are tested by robotic arms that simulate 20 + years of use; for example, Blum’s testing facilities are world famous for their extreme attention to detail. Any imperfections found during testing are taken care of through further research prior to any items ever hitting our shelves!

Top appliance manufacturers are also rigorously testing their products, with sophisticated techniques focusing on durability, longevity, noise and of course, performance. Renowned Italian appliance manufacturer Smeg, for example, has one of the best testing facilities in the world of appliances. When Aussie consumers were complaining about spinach being caught and blocking their Smeg dishwashers, the manufacturer had Aussie spinach imported to their factory in Italy so they could specifically test the different texture of our spinach: now that’s dedication!
