The beauty of handmade tiles is that they truly never do go out of style; their elegance and charming characteristics create a certain warmth and atmosphere that can only be achieved with the use of a handcrafted product. These tile collections feature striking variations of colour, shape and texture which create an organic beauty in any interior design project, from the bathroom to the kitchen and even as a feature element in other spaces of the home.
There are several different factors that should be considered when it comes to selecting your new handmade tiles, from the different types available, to their recommended care as well as price points, all of which are answered in our guide to handmade tiles.
What are the different types of handmade tiles?
Handmade tiles are available in an assortment of different materials, with the most popular choices being ceramic tiles and concrete or cement tiles. Each of these materials is made using different techniques, with highly skilled Artisans passing down these practices from one generation to the next.
A highly decorative collection of ceramic tiles, our Archaic collection is handmade and finished with a delightful range of decorative patterns that are inspired by Spanish, Mexican and Mediterranean traditional designs.
How are handmade tiles made?
Ceramic handmade tiles are made using a combination of clay, water and sand, with additional ingredients such as silica sand, talc or feldspar often included to assist in the creation of different styles, colours or finishes. The mixture is combined and hand rolled into the desired thickness before being hand cut into the required shapes. The tiles are left to dry before being placed in a kiln to bake them into their finished solid state. If a glaze or etched design is to be included in the tiles, this is either usually completed before the tiles are baked and may sometimes even require two rounds of kiln baking: once before the decorative surface has been applied and once again afterwards.
Our Arabian Handmade tiles are made in Morocco using centuries old tile making techniques. The range is available in an astonishing range of colours, from bold gemstone inspired hues to soft, neutral tones to help you create the perfect colour scheme in your project. The organic lines and striking colour variations in the range make for an exquisite finish that can only be achieved with an authentic handmade product.
Handmade concrete tiles on the other hand, are made by pouring cement into a mould that is then hydraulically pressed and then left to cure in a water bath. Colours and any other required additives are included in the cement mixture, resulting in a tile that shows its surface colour running throughout the entire body of the tile. These tiles have the unique ability of allowing their use as both a floor and wall tile and will often feature a smooth, matte surface that is perfectly suited to any style of home, from traditional period styled interiors to more modern or contemporary spaces.
Do handmade tiles need sealing?
Whether your handmade tiles will need sealing or not is dependent on the type of material the tile is made of and whether or not there is a glaze included (in the case of ceramic tiles). Concrete is a porous material and as such will require sealing in order to prevent the build-up of grime and moisture from penetrating into the tile which can lead to corrosion and damage. Handmade ceramic tiles can include both glazed and unglazed varieties. Unglazed ceramic tiles will normally require sealing, once again to protect from possible damage, staining or corrosion, whereas a glazed ceramic tile will never require the same treatment as the glaze itself acts as a protective barrier. You will find more detailed information about sealing your tiles and the various sealing products we recommend in our guide.

How much do handmade tiles cost?
As can be expected of any handcrafted product, ceramic handmade tiles can cost upwards of $300m², making them a high-end finish. This cost of course, accounts for the many years of training and expertise, as well as the labour intensive process involved in their creation and the artistry of the end result itself. Handmade cement tiles are often made using a less labour intensive processes, with collections usually starting from around $150m² making them an affordable alternative that can be used in many areas of the home.
In terms of laying costs, you will not see a dramatic difference in the cost of labour however, it is important to keep in mind that the laying process of a patterned tile that requires matching up with the surrounding tiles will often fetch a higher price tag as there is more time and attention to detail that is required throughout the process.
