What are Concrete Tiles/Encaustic Tiles?

Concrete tiles have long been favoured in home designs for many years, showing up in popular architectural periods such as the Victorian, Edwardian and Gothic eras. These tiles are characterised by their smooth, matte finishes, dusty colour options and often intricately patterned styles. Also commonly referred to as encaustic tiles, you will find many modern options available to choose from, each with its own unique style and character to help bring your interiors to life! Bold patterns, chalky colours and striking colour contrasts are all exciting features that you can expect from traditionally styled concrete or encaustic tiles which can usually be used as both a floor or wall finish in the home to help you create a charming and welcoming atmosphere in your design scheme. The tiles themselves are created using a mixture of coloured cement that is poured into templates or moulds to create crisp patterns and designs. The result is an incredibly dense and durable product that creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere in any interior design project.

Greg Natale

A bold and dynamic collection, Greg Natale’s Pavimento series features a range of exciting patterns and colours that will create a strong statement in your next project. These ever stylish encaustic tiles can be used on all interior wall and floor surfaces, making for endless creative possibilities!

Being a porous material however, you will find that encaustic tiles will require regular sealing in order the protect the tile from staining or marking – Thankfully, there are many different quality cleaning products available that will contain a small amount of sealant within them. Using these cleaners on your new tiles will ensure the time between professional sealing is lengthened, making sure your tiles’ finish remains at its best!

Porcelain Concrete-Look Tiles

For those looking to do away with sealing altogether, or for commercial projects that will receive higher than normal foot traffic, porcelain tiles may be a better choice. Modern tile manufacturing techniques have allowed for the creation of ultra-realistic concrete-look designs. These unique collections recreate the traditional smooth and chalky surface of encaustic tiles as well as the rustic textured surfaces of hand trowel concrete using durable porcelain instead, leading to a surface finish that is highly resistant against scratching and staining while also being almost completely non-porous.

The St James collection is a porcelain tile that offers a realistic concrete finish. Available in indoor and outdoor tile options as well as a trending chevron tile variety, this collection can be used in all areas of the home to help create a strong sense of continuity throughout your interiors.

Modern tile manufacturing techniques have allowed for a vast range of finishes and textures to be achieved, leading to many impressive options that perfectly simulate the characteristics of traditional concrete tiles, natural stone tiles and even timber look products. These tiles allow for more design possibilities as they can be used in spaces where these more sensitive materials have traditionally been avoided (such as in the humid environment of the bathroom for example).
